How to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time!

You CAN gain muscle and lose fat at the same time and I will show you how. Common wisdom is that you have to gain some fat to gain muscle, its the whole bulking and cutting mentality. I'm here to tell you its wrong, at least for most people. Because of many peoples unrealistic expectations about adding muscle they come to the incorrect conclusion that you can't gain muscle while losing fat. Gaining muscle. Most mature adults can gain a maximum of 15 pounds of muscle in a year but many can only gain 5lbs of muscle a year. That's...

Rest and Overtraining

What I'm about to tell you is completely counter intuitive. Most people I know who are disappointed with their bodybuilding results are suffering from over-training rather than under-training. Its a hard concept to grasp that sometimes you can increase your strength and gain more muscle by working out less! The "work ethic" is so ingrained in us. We are so used to hearing things like: You get what you pay for You get out what you put inbut its not true in bodybuilding! Or it is but only up to a point. If you workout too much, you will get...

6-pack abs by summer?

"How long will it take me to get 6-pack abs?"Is it too late to get 6-pack abs by summer? This is one of the most common questions I get this time of year. Here is a simple 3 step procedure to tell how long it will take to get lean enough for those 6-pack abs to pop out!To have abs, you need to get down to 7% bodyfat. Calculate how many pounds fat 7% would be. For example if you weigh 100 pounds, you can only have 7 pounds of fat (100lbs X .07) if you want 6-pack abs. Calculate...

How to achieve goals you think are impossible

No question, I woukd have quit at mile 70 had I not told the world I was doing 120 miles today! My knees were in excruciating pain from the road bike with clipless pedals that I hadnt been on for 9 months. I was wounded from the minivan cutting me off. I was cold. I was filthy from changing my tire on the muddy shoulder. I didnt want to climb the 2850' mountain between me and home. As I touched on in my motivation video, stating your goals publically can be a powerful motivator - worked for me. I was...

40 miles down, 85 to go

Its only 10:30am, Im doing ok for time - kinda. Almost all the elevation gain(3000-5000') is in the last 40 miles, so far just easy rollers. One incident already. Stupid mini- van driver cut me off doing a right turn in front of me and I had to lock and slide. No signal or warning at all - I was looking in my rearview. They mis estimated my speed (25mph) or just couldnt be inconvienced by slowing down. Anyway they nearly rolled their minivan and I nearly gave them a face print in the side of their van. Gotta love...

Milo, my co-pilot

Milo likes to feel he is helping out with the driving as I head to the parents for the day to help out around the house. My size 15 shoe there is actually bigger than Milo :) Wondering why I have such a horrible time finding cycling shoes, the EEE makes it even tougher!Looking forward to my 120 mile training ride tomorrow, weather is a green light - all set.

Suspension Training

Suspension training is really big these days, the pricey gym I visited today had a big setup. Of course, all you good scoobysworkshop home workout folks out there already have a sturdy pullup bar so its a simple matter to make your own home made suspension setup with mountaineering rope and a simple selection of handles!

Shaving grams off the bike

So in my quest to find a replacement for my 10 year old cycling shoes I was reminded of how cyclists are so weight conscious. Cyclists will pay thousands of dollars to save a pound on their bikes. The funniest thing is that most people forget that its the total weight that counts - rider plus bike. Most people weight about 200 lbs and most bikes weigh about 20 lbs (in round numbers). Almost all cyclists except the elite racers could easily shave off 5% bodyfat (10lbs). Not only is that a lot cheaper to do but you look and...
