Elbow position during pullups

What to do with your elbows during pullups? Point them sideways? Forward? Out at 45 degrees? Its really interesting because it lets you focus more on your lats or biceps depending on the angle. If you take a non bodybuilder and ask them to do a pullup, you will find something interesting because without any instruction, they naturally find the easiest way to do them. First half of them will do a chin up rather than a pullup, why is that? Because its easier! Why it is easier? Because when you do chin ups, you can use both your biceps and...

protein powders

As part of recommending a new protein powder, I am trying everything - egg, whey, soy, hemp. I am looking for not only high quality protein that is appropriate for bodybuilders but products that are natural and/or organic. Part of the reason I no longer recommend Optimum Nutrition products is that their "100% Natural" product is not 100% natural in my book anymore. After trying pure protein powders (no sweeteners, flavors, or anything else added), a universal truth has developed - all protein powders taste pretty bad in their natural state but each has its own quirks. None of them taste...

How scoobysworkshop got named

I am passionate about fitness and bodybuilding but its not my entire life. I have other passions in life as well, its one of the reasons I am busy 24/7 - I just don't have enough time for all the cool things I love doing. One of my other passions is building things, its the engineer in me. I love building cherry shaker-inspired furniture in my workshop and back in the late 90's wanted a website to showcase those pieces. I also was building an airplane in the shop and wanted a website to keep people up to date on...

butt training

OK, its not what you think. This isnt about working out the glutes, this is about preparing the butt for long distance cycling. On June 5th I do the 600 mile lifecycle which is 100 miles a day which sounds like a lot but it isnt. Anyone in good health can get them into good enough shape to do this easily with about 9 months of training. Surprisingly, the problem for most people is not the muscle strength, the muscle endurance or their cardio endurance - its butt problems. Doing one 100 mile ride is no problem but it really...

Barefoot running, skip the expensive shoes

These expensive five-toed barefoot running shoes are all the rage but please save your money! Only in America could we take something so simple and basic as barefoot running and turn it into a hundred million dollar business! There are much cheaper alternatives! The thing I have against these expensive shoes is first, that I fear they cause more health problems than they solve because people dont take time to educate themselves about barefoot running. I see people walking around in them around town and they just use them as normal walking shoes, landing heel first like a jackhammer as they...

Summer Pump Hammer Curls

Lets talk about the right and wrong ways to do hammer curls. Hammer curls work the biceps, forearms and give you a pump so amazing you wont be able to reach your mouth to brush your teeth. Before we get started though, a word of warning - DONT BE A CURL-MONKEY! Many beginners make the mistake of just focusing on arms and they end up looking like a crab, little itsy-bitsy body with huge claw-arm. Arms should take up at most 10% of your weekly workout time. In fact, if you are a beginner you shouldnt be doing curls at all,...

Scoobys Triathlon Results

I surprised myself. I almost called this race off because of the stress fracture in my foot, but I had a prudent plan for dealing with it. My only goal was to complete the olympic distance triathlon without having to resort to walking on my hands to finish the 10k :) Not only did I complete the triathlon but I bettered my time by 7 minutes! One of my four fitness goals for 2011 was to better my time by 5 minutes so I was giddy with excitement when I saw the time at the finish line because I didnt...
