Type 2 Diabetics and Nutrition

Its still really, really important for Type 2 Diabetics to control their blood sugar with good nutrition. People with type 2 diabetes carry a 15 percent increased risk of premature death compared to healthy people, but when they poorly control their blood sugar levels, their risk is even higher. Really interesting is that the risk is greater in younger people than in older people: "What you begin to see is the increased risk of mortality in diabetes is highest the younger you are," Ratner said. "The significant impact is really in those individuals under the age of 75, and it gets progressively...

YouTube Red and Scoobysworkshop

For those who have not heard, "Red" is YouTube's new paid subscription service. Here is my stance, so let me state this clearly: My videos WILL be available free of charge. The reason I started my website ten years ago was that I firmly believe that fitness, health, and bodybuilding information MUST be available to everyone regardless of financial means.   I believe that just as strongly today as I did a decade ago.  Fitness and health are a basic human right in my opinion, not just something for the privileges few.   All how-to web pages are free and all...

Mediterranean Diet Makes You Smarter

Mediterranean Diet Makes You Smarter?  Well, maybe! Well maybe it doesnt make you smarter but it might keep you from becoming dumber :) Research suggests that the Mediterranean Diet might help keep your brain from shrinking with age, of course, that does not prove you are smarter either but thats another issue altogether. The Mediterranean Diet (click to design one) is a not really a diet but a nutritional philosophy, and a very healthy one at that in my opinion.  Although you *can* lose weight as easily on the Mediterranean nutritional plan, it makes for a excellent nutritional plan 365 days...

Research and reality

We always need to be careful about how we use research results, peer reviewed or not.  As I am constantly saying: "Research does not PROVE anything, it merely suggests ..." Scooby Werkstatt And just because research suggests something doesn't necessarily mean that it applies to you and your condition.  The intricacies of research are mind boggling and just reading the abstract can easily lead you to form an incorrect opinion.  You really need to read the whole research paper to understand and frankly, fully comprehending a research paper is usually beyond the reach of anyone who is not a researcher in...

research suggests 30 minutes of cardio per day is not enough

New study says 30 minutes of exercise a day is not enough. You should get 2x or 4x that much. For years I have been preaching cardio and people on YouTube and Facebook fight me every minute of the way. I put 20-30 minutes into the workout plans because I could not justify putting more in although personally I have averaged 1-2hrs of cardio a day for the last two decades. This was a huge meta-analysis that reviewed 12 studies involving 370,460 people with differing amounts of exercise. Over a period of 15 years, this group experienced 20,203 heart failure events. Each of the participants reported...

Supplements, fast track to the emergency room

23,000 people a year have to go to the emergency room because of dietary supplements!  Creatine, weight loss products, muscle gain products - all of the above.  Its not a regulated industry and there are not even the most rudimentary testing requirements. Its no secret that I dislike supplements.  My first experiment with a tame supplement (creatine) nearly ended in disaster because it was tainted with heavy metals but fortunately my doctor discovered it during a routine blood test.  Ever since then I have been on a campaign to discourage everyone from using supplements. Seriously, its not worth it for...

Easy Cheap Halloween Costume

Its time to start thinking about your Halloween costume for 2015 now. Do NOT leave it to the last minute because then you will do something really, really lame.  We have all seen those Halloween stores that pop up in every empty store in malls across the nation in October filled with ill-fitting, poor quality, expensive halloween costumes. If you wait till the last minute then that is what you are going to end up with and none of them look good on anyone with a physique becuase they are made for the average American. For less than $10 you...
