Race with me in virtual half marathon on Dec 12!

On Saturday December the 12th we will be having a virtual half marathon at 1pm central time (click for start time in your time zone).  For those of us, like myself, who are not presently in condition to do this event, we are still encouraged to participate!  If you cant run 13 miles, make your own challenge.  You can do a 5k starting at 1pm.  You can walk the whole time, or you can do as I am going to do and bike the whole time. It will be fun! Those of us on stationary equipment who can safely chat...

The most popular ‘vegetable’ in America!

Big pillow scream!  Report out from the USA Department of Agriculture reports that the white potato is the most popular 'vegetable'.  I put vegetable in quotes because in my humble opinion, potatoes are classified as vegetables on a technicality and not because of nutritional value.  Its kind of like the Ronald Regan Era push for classifying ketchup as a vegetable. [caption id="attachment_17814" align="alignnone" width="296"] The most popular vegetable in America! ... Isn't![/caption] 30% of the 'vegetables' consumed are potatoes ... and most of those are in the form of french fries and potato chips.  Seriously, we wonder why health care costs are...

Glycemic index and diabetes, more complex than we realized

As is often the case, our hubris when it comes to our nutritional knowledge is embarrassing.    Have diabetes or pre-diabetes?  Simple, all you have to do is eat low glycemic index foods, right?  WRONG! Turns out that, surprise, surprise, different people react differently to the same foods.  What spikes the blood sugar in one person will not budge it in another.    In other words, we really don't understand how food is digested. Researchers speculate that the differing flora of bacteria resident in peoples small intestines are responsible for these differing reactions to foods.  Peter Turnbaugh at UCSF is...

coffee makes you live longer!

This is big news and great news for coffee drinkers!  Researchers followed over 200,000 medical professionals for 20 years and found those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day had a 15% reduced risk of dying!  This is amazing!  Skip the cardio and healthy nutrition and just head to the coffee station???  Not so fast!  If you want to read the full research, here it is in the Journal "Circulation" Guess what, turns out it didn't matter whether the coffee was caffeinated or decaffeinated!  Say what?  This is an awesome example of how you need to be very careful in...

Surgery and fitness – do what you can!

You know me, I practice what I preach and I have gotten a great chance this week to do just that.  Its now been exactly 7 days since I had my umbilical hernia fixed, an issue that I have had since birth and finally got fixed.   "Do what you can" started on day 1.  Even though getting out of chairs was extremely difficult I walked around the house as much as I could but any form of exercise was completely out.  The one thing I had control of on the first days was my nutrition.  I knew my system...

Brown is healthier than white

This has gotten out of control!  People have forgotten why brown food is healthier than white food.  When people are shopping and they want to be healthy they will grab brown rice instead of white rice - thats fine because brown rice does have more fiber and vitamins than white rice. The problem is that the marketing whizzes on 5th Avenue have figured this out and use it to pass off junk food as health food.  Most people these days are so poorly educated on nutrition and health that they never stop to ask *why* brown is healthier than white,...

Scooby is lucky, he has good genetics!

Scooby is lucky, he has good genetics! I get this a lot.  I do have reasonable genetics, not in the symmetry department but certainly in my ability to gain muscle, but that is only one of the many reasons that I am muscular.  There are hundreds of thousands of people with genetics as good as mine whose bodies dont look anything like mine.  Think about that one! People often complain to me that the reason I have so much better a physique than them is because I am "lucky enough to have good genetics" ... then in the same breath telling me...

Why you should STOP taking vitamins!

If you buy vitamins you are probably wasting your money! Not only that, you are fooling yourself into thinking that a pill from a factory can relive you of your need to eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits.   SAVE MONEY, STOP BUYING VITAMINS!   I myself have not taken multivitamins since I was a kid because I believe that the best way to get vitimans is in their natural state, from vegetables and fruits.  Seems a study of nearly half a million people has proven me right: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group of national experts that...
