I was doing my normal back routine today when I stumbled upon something. I was doing barbel rows. Ussually i am slightly bent over at the hips with my legs also slighlty bent (to take some weight off my lower back) and i draw the weight up and back toward my hips, the whole time focusing on contracting my lats and other upper back. so, today i tried doing the same movment without drawing my arms back at all. I just contracted my lats and upper back while using my arms as "hooks" not bending at the elbow. I got a pretty good pump in the target muscles and felt well worked. it looked like i was barely moving the weight (maybe 5-7 inches) but it was a pretty good workout. I liked it. dont know if it is good enough to do all the time though.

What is this movement called and does anyone else do it?

Sounds like bent-over shrugs, a very rare, and in my opinion, redundant movement.

It's not an upper traps movement anyway, it's more of middle traps movement, which works with lats when you pull your shoulder blades back.
