Heh, I know it sounds stupid but would this be a good cardio workout?
If you do the same movement will it be the same effect?
Thanks.

Its pretty much the same in my view.

As long as you focus on posture, breathing and ensure you do all the usual movements with a normal jump rope, i.e. wrist movements etc then you'll get the same benefit as with an actual rope.

In fact, there are ropeless jump ropes on the market which count the number of jumps etc etc which may be of use?

I did the "jump rope without a rope" routine a lot while in between sets of Plyometrics workouts in P90X.  Jump rope, hot foot, jumping jacks, run lunges, mini-mary katherines, were all "in-between" exercises when you could either rest or keep movin'.  We did them to warm up as well.  Running in place with knees up, knees out, and heels up were also staples of the warm-up routine.  Hope that helps!
