You can lose about 300-500 calories for 30 min in the sauna. U. S. Army research shows infrared sauna use can burn as many as 300 to 600 calories during one sauna session. This happens due to the sweating process itself, as well as increased heart rate.

You might lose weight from sweating but I really don't think it burns calories.

As to the believe that you lose ONLY water weight, that is totally false and wrong. People who say you lose ONLY water weight have not done enough research. Yes, you for sure you lose water weight as you sweat,... HOWEVER you sweat because your body's metabolism goes into overdrive, thus, you are burning calories. You lose calories because your body has to work hard at keeping your body temperature down, like when you drink a ice-cold cup of water, your body has to work (metabolism) to bring the water to body temperature, which is why drinking cold water in the morning wakes you up and kick-starts your metabolism early before breakfast (try it sometime, wake up at 2 a.m., and drink some really cold water, and see how long you stay up before going back to sleep).
Likewise, when your inside/outside body heat battles with the temperature in the sauna, your body is working hard to keep your body cool, which is where we get Sweat, just like exercising (in a simple way of saying it). When you run, you sweat? Why? Because your metabolism is working, not because you're merely getting hot. You can lose anywhere from 500-1000 calories in a 30 minutes session depending on your weight and how hot the sauna is set. So, go and relax in a sauna, and burn calories. Just be careful not to overdo it by knowing how much you can handle. If you're older, watch your heart. Your heart will pump faster and harder. Disclosure: Consult with a doctor before using a sauna. Use at your own risk.

well i think there has to be something true on this... Something new I've found you can burn calories in the sauna, but you will be better off taking a short healthy walk. Most of any perceived weight loss in a sauna is due to sweating. The loss of bodily fluids will make you lighter for a few hours, but you will get the kilos (pounds) back very soon. You will remain thirsty and when you next drink, the fluids will be restored to your body. Meanwhile, increased cardiac output and the cooling process make the body use its energy resources. Estimates range from 300 or even 500 calories per sauna session (30 minutes), making it comparable to walking or jogging. In the sauna the only muscles working are those of your heart. While the heart is an important muscle, you would gain more from any physical activity, be it walking or swimming. These make your muscles grow and muscle tissue burns energy even while you rest. Not only will you feel better after a workout, you will be burning fat 24 hours a day. You will sometimes hear of boxers or wrestlers going to the sauna to lose weight. High end athletes can do this for two reasons. First, they only need to lose weight for a few hours, when they are officially weighed. They will drink a considerable amount of power drinks before entering the rink to get their energy back. Second, they are constantly monitored by their physician who supposedly knows when to stop. I have been asked whether it makes sense to use rubber suits that promote sweating in the sauna. Not only do I consider it unnecessary, such suits could actually be dangerous since they work by blocking the most important method your body has to adjust its temperature.

If it was true not alot of people would be overweight and youd see noone on treadmills or on ellipticals doing cardio as they will be sitting down in a sauna doing nothing and burning 1000 calories an hour..
The way I burn my calories is run, 900-1000 calories perhour
