I thought it would be nice to have a separate introduction topic for the women only, so we all can have a better idea who the women are, lurking around the forums! So, gals, even if you've already introduced yourselves in the "Off Topic" forum, please re-introduce yourself here! I'll go first: HI I'm Goldie! I have this handle because my hubby and I rescue Golden Retrievers. We have two right now, but we've rescued three others in the past. I started weight lifting with Scooby's beginner program, which I did May 2008 - November 2008. In November 2008 I moved on to Scooby's intermediate plan, but at the end of January 2009 and through February I had to take a break because I had surgery. I eased back into the intermediate plan around the end of February (sooner than doctor warned, but I survived!) and continued that through the end of June 2009. I'm in the eighth week of Scooby's advanced plan as of this posting. I have always been careful about my nutrition, but when I started the advanced plan, I have been taking more care to spread out my protein as Scooby advises. I am proof that it's hard for women to get bulked up. I lift fairly heavy weights for someone my size, although not nearly as heavy as the guys do; but my goals are for endurance and strength. Just to give you an idea, though, I can bench 80 lbs. 3 x 10, squat 100 lbs. 3 x 10, and I can do three sets of twenty-ones with 15 lb. dumbbells in each hand (that one is REALLY hard!) Those weights aren't impressive when you compare it to what the guys lift, but I want to show that women can lift more than the pretty pink dumbbells and not end up looking like deformed quasi-men! I am 5'2" tall (157cm), and when I took this picture on 8 August, I weighed 111 lbs. (50.3kg) and my body fat percentage is 18%.

I always considered that relative strength is what should matter. Goldie, you can squat more than your bodyweight (I'm talking about 1 RM), which is more than most guys I know can. and almost bench your own bodyweight. And that's a great achievement (surely there aren't any 40 lb pink DBs  ).

Wow you must have been reading my mind. I was just wondering how much weight I should be lifting. I am doing the light weights right now, mainly cause I wanna get use to the actual movements. I would like to eventually do more weight though. As of right now I am doing 5 lb. weights and I am feeling pretty sore, but I imagine that once I get use to the 5 lbs and it becomes to easy I am going to want to lift more. So thanks for answering my question before I asked

By the way my name is Katie (KT) I am just starting out. I have 3 kids and they are my main reason for wanting to get healthy. Me and my husband are doing this together which is awesome cause we look out for each other. Some of my goals are: I would like to lose weight cause I know that I am not at a healthy weight. I judge how much I am losing not by how much I weigh,but by how much better my clothes are fitting . lol I hate scales I am doing much more cardio then I have ever done in my life and it feels awesome my favorite machine is the elliptical I do on the average 6 miles in 1 hour. I am working very hard to cut 2 min off every mile, but that will come in time. i also enjoy riding my bike with my 8 yr old daughter we have a blast we are our own bike gang lol. Now thanks to Scooby and my husband I am now lifting weights. This also feels pretty awesome and I am having a much easier time getting out of bed in the middle of the night cause I am feeling stronger. Some day I would like to be able to do a pull up. I could never do this in high school and I hated it so now I am making it one of my goals lol Thats about it for now I am just starting out so any suggestions would be appreciated

Yeah I really think that it's not about how much any of us can curl or bench, but how much we can do compared to our body weight and in this sense you (I mean Goldie) are WAY stronger than majority of guys here including me.

Wow ok i have found the womens area! Thank goodness! my name Is April and I have been looking for an answer to getting a very much more visibly stronger body and more energy. I seem to have a Thyroid problem that plagues my family, I am 5'7" 180 lbs.

 Another girl! April, have you had your blood checked for your thyroid function? Because if your thyroid isn't producing enough of the right hormones, there are medications a doctor can prescribe. If you haven't had this done, you should; it's a simple blood test. Anything that Scooby says for nutrition and fitness works just as well for women. Be sure to read everything on his site about nutrition ---> Nutrition. He also has a good section on reading nutritional labels. His recommendation for 5-6 small meals a day is ideal if you're trying to lose weight, because you seldom feel hungry, and you keep your metabolism working steadily. The guys here on the BB are great, and I'm sure that many of your questions have already been answered; just do a search (there's detailed directions on how to search at the top of the General Questions forum), and see what you can find. This section of the BB is for questions that relate more directly to women's topics, but don't be hesitant to ask questions in any of the forums on the BB. And if you're not sure about something, you can always PM me privately!

Thank you very much! and i have no set date for a blood test yet but i have plenty of symtoms of hypothyroid disease? i believe its called i realize medicine is essential to get me on my feet and whatnot. energy is a big issue for me and being 18 i know i should be much more active. I will extensively examine the Nutrition part of Scoobys site and make sure I know what to do about my nutrition. I will PM you with my further concerns Goldie =D it is very nice to have help available at my fingertips!

Anyway - Goldie, you and I are exactly the same size. This is good for me because whenever I need to accomplish something, I tend to compare myself to others which works for me in a positive way and gives me an extra boost. Take care all /J

Hey - I'm Helen - have a 15 year old son, and well - not as thin as I once was! :'( I used to go to the gym nearly everyday - and well have a life! lol - pre-son! I'm turning the big 40 this year - and I really want to start getting the pounds off in a sensible way and build up muscle - well tone up! lol I've been on Scoobies diet now a couple of days - and just starting to introduce the cardio - do a fair amount of walking anyway - trying to jog a little and am on the basic routine! although I don't have a pull up bar!  I'm really glad that I found this site - as I was fed up with websites trying to sell me something! And with the false claims that went with them! Anyone got any easy ideas on triceps by the way? Haven't got a long bar weight? (don't laugh) as yet! And pushups are hard! :-[ So anyway - thought I'd say hi! Helen

HI Helen! Welcome! Any kind of cardio activity that you enjoy is great! It's good to start with walking, just be sure you're walking quickly enough to get your heart rate up. Jogging/running can be hard on your joints, so the best thing is to ease into it. Walk to warm up, then run for a minute or two, then walk again for a few minutes, then run, then walk... you see what I mean. Gradually you'll be able to increase the amount of time you run and decrease your walking time. BE SURE you have good shoes! Shoes made for running are also good for walking, but not the other way around; and you shouldn't keep using running shoes for more than about 500 miles/six months (the cushioning goes flat). If your main goal is to lose weight, then you should concentrate on increasing your cardio time, and do the strength training secondary. As Scooby says, if you only have time for either cardio or strength training, do the cardio! Yes, pushups are hard! If you have to, do them from your knees instead of your toes, just be sure to keep your back straight. Pushups will target your triceps, too. Once you get used to doing pushups, if you want to concentrate more on triceps, you can add some "diamond" or "triangle" pushups--put your hands under your chest and with your fingers and thumb, make a diamond or triangle shape. You'll feel these in your triceps fast! Work on mastering the regular kind first, though. Even if you don't have a pullup bar, there are other places you can do pullups. Is there a playground nearby? You can use the side bar on swing sets, or the climbing frame to do pullups. Pullups are even harder than pushups, so check out this video ---> Assisted Pullups for Beginners --There are quite a few videos in the video library that are for beginners, so look at all of them! And I bet your son could be a great supporter of your efforts!

Okay. . . hello. I am new to this forum, & just recently found Scooby's videos on youtube & his website afterward. I must say I'm interested in strength training to TONE, not "get ripped. " My broad shoulders look manly enough just toned & I do like looking a bit feminine. :D
I did strength training when I was 135 lbs. & 16 years old (I'm 28 years old now), so I do know what I look like with nicely toned muscles. However, the equipment & personal trainer I had at my disposal back then are just not within my budget these days. Beyond that, I've forgotten a lot of what I learned back then.
I am 5'8" and in 2007 I weighed a very unhealthy 250 lbs. - mostly fat. I have always been at least moderately active. I walk a lot more than many Americans & I love to go hiking, and even did so when I was overweight, taking on the kind of difficult hikes that even people in "perfect shape" can have trouble with. As a result, my legs are very muscular and strong, but the rest of me. . . well, the rest of me is still catching up. I started losing the weight in the beginning of last year, and I now weigh 183. I'm still trying to lose more, but I have so much loose skin around my belly, I really want to tone that so I actually look like I've lost as much weight as I have.
I read what Scooby said about spot fat removal being a myth, but it seems to me that spot TONING is quite possible, just from what I've seen with my legs. I was hoping to do that with my abs, but I just am not sure how much of my belly is loose skin and how much of it is fat I still need to lose by way of cardio. Maybe someone can offer me some helpful advice.
Additionally, I recently started tracking everything I eat & found out that I was actually getting too few calories (about 600-800 a day, only - which is why my weight loss suddenly stopped on me; I was starving myself) & that as a result I was suffering protein deficiency (which most docs say is only an issue with really low calorie intake like I was doing). I have since added protein shakes into my diet & upped my calorie intake to about 700-500 less than my BMR, and as I'm looking at an upcoming surgery, the recovery for which will take extra protein, I'm going to be upping my protein intake, but will have to take a week off exercising for the post-op recovery.
I see pictures are asked for here, but I can't seem to get them to show.

Kristal, put your pictures in your profile. You can't put up pictures or links in regular posts until you have 50 posts. You've made some terrific progress! If you do a search on "extra skin" in the BB you'll see that the topic has been discussed before. You might want to start with Scooby's Beginning Workout Plan, this includes ab work, and he has a lot of ab videos here ---> Abs and Losing Weight. Welcome! The guys here are great; we're a very friendly forum!
