Chest too big? Legs too big? All about camera angles and proportions

Sometimes I feel like Britney Spears in her song “You want a piece of me”. Look at the comments in any of my videos and you will see a wide array of criticisms of my physique all in the very same video:
  • some will say I’m too fat
  • some will say I’m too thin
  • some will say my chest is too big
  • some will say my chest is too small
  • some will say my legs are too big
  • some will say my legs are too small
  • many say I’m ugly
Good thing the only person I need to please is myself, I would go crazy trying to please everyone :)
The point of this post is about camera angles. In person, nobody ever tells me I need to work on my legs and I dont think its because I’m intimidating. I am 240lbs of muscle but nobody is threatened by me when they meet me, I smile and laugh too much to be intimidating. What I realized is that the way I film most of my videos, the camera angle is such that my chest is closer to the camera than my legs thus my chest appears larger than it is in proportion to the rest of my body. Just to reverse things, I took the above shot to show how much camera angles affect perception. If I shot all my videos from the above perspective, first, people would think I was weird. But secondly, they would all be telling me that I need to lay off the legs and concentrate more on upper body. Its all camera angles. I have been working hard on my legs over the last 3 months when my shoulder has been out of commission but I’m sure there has been no noticeable increase in thigh measurements, muscle gain is much slower than that in 50 year olds :)
On the subject of proportions. Many comments on my videos are of the “your head is too small – hee, hee, hee” variety. One interesting thing, all humans regardless of size have almost exactly the same size head. Why? Because a brain is a brain and it doesnt vary in size according to the size of the torso. A 4′ midget has the same size head as Andre the Giant. What this means is that you can get a good idea how tall someone is even if you just see a photo of them from the shoulders up. If their head looks like a teacup on broad shoulders then they are very tall – this is the case with me. If the head is nearly as wide as the shoulders then they are very, very short. This can come in very handy when look at photos of pro bodybuilders because often there is no background to give you a context of their height. Many people are surprised when they meet a pro bodybuilder in person how short they are because the photos dont give a reference unless you know what to look for.
This photo was taken on Halloween day. No, this wasnt my Halloween costume :) As you would expect though, my halloween costume never includes a shirt :)

  1. Now I dont feel so bad when I look down at my man boobs. Maybe they're not man boobs after all. Its just that my chest is closer to my head.
Oh and my @#$% is too far away from my head and thats why it looks…

  2. It's Little Person, not Midget!

Seriously though, you make a good point Scooby. The first time I saw Jay Cutler on YouTube, I was sure he had to be 6'6" because his shoulders were just….damn man…But then I checked out his website and saw he is actually 5'9". My wife is 5'7" and I can see over the top of her head, so obviously the camera can be very misleading.

  3. i would never lay of a bodypart :L i would be gratefull for its size, i love the freaks of bodybuilding, branch warrens legs, roelly winklar and phill heaths triceps, cutlers back etc

  4. haha! Nice post, Scooby. And yeah, muscle gain is more difficult for those our age. I am still trying hard to get the chest gains I want, and it is haaaard.

  5. I never put 2+2 together about the average head size being a measurement tool for a person' Always something new to learn from you

  6. You are right about muscle gain being slower in 50 year olds, really looking forward to next tear when I hit 60.If it is slow now what will it be like then.

    Scooby Baba

  7. Well your good scoob just the traps bro need to get them in portion with your upper body (I'm not hating just a friendly suggestion)

  8. you forgot all the posts of people saying your massive and your "hot" i've seen them on your videos, im not pretending….

I'm glad the stupid Youtube comments don't bother you Scooby, they sure bother the hell out of me, and I just recently started watching your videos.

First of all, most seem to come from young guys who have no idea what a real man looks like. You look weird? Ugly? NO WAY! You look great. Not in the sense "you look great for your age", but "you look great", period.

Secondly, I used to be rather intimidated by muscular men, and I thought bodybuilders often looked rather mean (in a negative sense). You are the first one to shatter that image, because you seem to be a great person; always positive and kind.

And lastly, err.. I only had those two points to make. Bottom line is, anyone calling you too fat, weird or ugly should go get their head checked.

Please accept these compliments from an "anonymous" woman, I mean them sincerely ;)

  10. Hey Scooby, I just turned 40 on October 29th. Is hiking 3-5 days per week up a small mountain good cardio? I'm 6' 2" and 250lbs. It takes me about 15 minutes to walk up it and my heart gets pumping pretty well. Thanks, Charles

  11. I never really noticed your legs as being big or small. But in your recent video about incline decline and bench press, when you sat on your little bench your thighs looked massive. And in 90% of your videos your sitting down. Sitting down makes everyone look fatter than they are.

  12. You're great Scooby! Unfortunately, the Internet gives voice to cowards who wouldn't dare say anything in your face. Out of curiosity, without going into detail, how do you manage your lifestyle with your significant other without getting an eye roll when you pay so much attention to your physique? My wife thinks I'm obessed when I exercise too often LOL!

  13. theres a rumor that there was once 12ft people roaming the earth scoob! imagine those guys in strength training!!
