Thanksgiving Fitness Tips

Thanksgiving Fitness Tips

You can enjoy Thanksgiving without going overboard, here’s how!  With the bad weather of fall, many people are exercising less because they cant get outside and they eat more because of the holidays.  This bad combination of events leaves many 10-20 pounds heavier in springtime.  It doesn’t have to be that way and Thanksgiving is the perfect time to stop the trend.   For full details, please read holiday weight control but here are the basics:

  1. Fifteen minutes before the big meal, drink two 16 ounce glasses of water.  This will help make you feel full with less food.
  2. Plan on getting two plates of food.  On your first plate, pile on the vegetables. take a modest portion of lean meat,  and just take a small, satisfying portion of everything else.
  3. After finishing your first plate, talk and and enjoy the company of friends and family for at least fifteen minutes before going back for seconds, and then drink another 16 ounce glass of water.   This delay allows your stomach time to tell your brain that it’s been satisfied.  By delaying you will find that you will end up eating far less and being just as satisfied.
  4. Start a new family tradition. After the meal, take a long walk! This serves two purposes. First it burns off that big meal you just had but more importantly, it makes you feel less guilty. Call it even, one big meal and one big walk. The next day you can go back to your healthy eating. This avoids the common effect the holidays have on people, the old  ”I’ve already blown it, I might as well wait till spring to start a diet” attitude.
With these four simple tips you can enjoy yourself today AND feel good about yourself tomorrow!

  1. I believe everything posted was actually very reasonable.
However, what about this? suppose you composed a catchier post title?
I ain’t saying your content isn’t solid., but suppose you added something
that grabbed people’s attention? I mean Thanksgiving Fitness Tips – Scooby's
Home Workouts is kinda boring. You might look at
Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create news titles to grab people to open the links.
You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to get people interested about what you’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it would bring your posts a little livelier.

  2. Gotta go with Graham on this. Actually, I already did. Pecan pie was good. So was the pumpkin pie and the brownies, and of course the turkey and gravy and turkey and gravy over biscuits the next day. A lot of other stuff was good too. Back to normal eating today though with no regrets.

  3. Or. You could eat whatever the hell you want for one day. Because in retrospect, one day, much less one meal of obvious overconsumption, will not do nearly enough damage as you say it will. It’s as easy as stuffing yourself and going hard the next day. Don’t have to create an ideal “meal plan” for a day where you’re supposed to make happy and eat. Maybe you need to let loose and have some fun, Scoob.

      1. All vices are avoidable, with the proper state of mind. There are those who avoid vices completely and end up overindulging, who I like to call “mentally weak”; and, there are those that can have a cheat meal and say enough is enough and go right back to working hard and being productive. I am apart of the second demographic. Vices are only vices because they are given value. And face stuffing? The point is to stuff your face, then work it all off. It’s a fundamental motivational technique. Lifting and getting in shape is a very demanding lifestyle. Why not reward yourself from time to time? All that I am gathering from this is that he is taking the fun and thrill out of lifting and exercise as a whole.

        1. What I ate on thanksgivings, turkey(cousin of chicken in the meat dept., which chicken is a staple of bodybuilding),coffee, then water, and one piece of pie. And a few dinner rolls. The problem you missed in his whole post, is that some people are very strict dieters, while some others may be concerned that they will follow the crowd and gain 10+ pounds of fat in less then 2 months. He provided an alternative. No where in this did he state”you must do this or 1000 unlike fairies will plague you on the internet.” If lifting and overeating is what makes you happy, then have at it. For some of his audience, since his varies greatly, he offered a way to still feel full, and not kill yourself on caloric intake. From your past 2 posts you’ve made it sound like everyone lifts so they can eat more on holidays. I ate the same amount I nomally eat for dinner, and hung out with family I see once in a few years since I live 18 hours away. You had a self competative eating contest

          1. The central theme of the past two posts are not legitimizing overconsumption, but it’s merely reassuring people that for those who are fun and like a challenge and for those who aren’t stuck up Jews about their diet, that exercise is all about making a better version of you. And in that I believe that there are rewards to be afforded to those who work with such great intensity. I am a 17 year old body builder and spend 14+ hours in the gym a week. I ate my face off at Thanksgiving not because I can, not because my metabolic rate is at its optimal(though helpful), but because I know when I woke up the next day that I could work whatever I put on, off. And that’s what bodybuilding and exercise, and even life in general, is all about: continuously seeking new ways to challenge and better yourself self from the day before. And it’s Thanksgiving* you Nazi. Your grammar is hardly subpar for the esteem that you hold yourself.

          2. Graham, you’re young. Be careful about slipping into that egocentric hole that so many teenagers are in. Remember that different people have different goals. Whose to say what is right or wrong, Scooby’s just presenting ideas for a slice of people who are seeking some advice. Lets leave it at that!

  4. Scooby, Great advice.
Preparation is needed around the Holidays…
If I plan on going to someones house who I know will have foods which are not good for me I always eat a decent snack(my foods) before leaving home. That way I’m way more able to avoid sugary desserts, breads etc. Liquor can really pack on the pounds if you’re not careful. Also, if I plan to have beer (low-carb) I take a bottle or two along just in case . So, if the guest doesn’t have the beverage I want, I can switch to plan “B” and we’re all happy. Best part is I don’t gain weight and I eat well.

  5. another thing you forgot to mention is eating fatty food if you eat 2 big macs or 2 cakes before big meal you will feel full and will not consume as much food this helped me so much

  6. Water will be gone from stomach within minutes..it wont manage to active a stretch receptor for the feedback..more water=just more pee. I do no pause or rest. I sit I eat and when I’m done I’m done..no rest no going back to the table. Next day rollerblading for 2 h.

    1. Adding water won’t do much to your stomach’s pH* level. The stomach contains things such as buffers to keep pH in check. Now if you drank a tall glass of bleach which is a strong base then you might have some digestive issues. Happy Thanksgiving!
