Best excuses to skip workouts

People come up with all kinds of excuses to skip working out, what are the best you have heard?

Success in fitness, bodybuilding, and health requires perseverance and ingenuity – you cant give up every time there is a little obstacle.  Although I have never been injured in the gym, because of my very active lifestyle I am getting injuries all the time.  If I stopped working out every time I had an injury I would not have the physique I have today.  To be successful in bodybuilding, you need to learn how to work around injuries.  What people fail to realize is the healing effect of exercise, not only physical healing but mental healing as well.  Many an aspiring bodybuilder has gotten an injury, stopped working out because they “couldn’t”, and then got so depressed that they gave up lifting for good.  Avoid the downward spiral by doing what you can!  If fitness is a priority, you will find a way to make it happen.  If fitness is not a priority, you can make excuses :)

As many of you know, a week ago I got impaled and they couldn’t get it all out so infection set in.  Remember, “working around injuries” does not mean being a macho-idiot and doing 1RM squats with a fractured foot. “No pain, no gain” does not apply to pain caused by stupidity!  “working around injuries” means following doctors advice precisely to heal the injury asap while using your resourcefulness to workout as much as you can.

My hand is so painful that I cant even touch it, grasp a pencil, or wiggle my fingers.  Doctors orders are: “keep hand in splint, do not use at all, keep elevated, and warm salt water baths 4x daily”.  Before you look at the below pictures, how would YOU workout with these limitations?  How can you do a hand-less workout?  This week I have done a lat workout, a chest workout, core workout, a shoulder workout, and an hour every day – how did I do this while following doctors orders?  Scroll down to see:

Getting daily cardio was the hardest to figure out because keeping a hand elevated while doing the cardio rules out about every form of cardio I know of.  I rigged up a sling by using a hanging ab strap on my pullup bar and putting my bike trainer under it.  Pretty slick, huh?

whats your excuse to skip cardio

How about a chest workout?  How can you workout pecs when your hand cant touch anything?  This requires a pec deck machine:

working out chest with hand injuries

Now granted, just using a pec deck as a chest workout isn’t great but its infinitely better than nothing!  Shoulders are easy too with a side raise machine below:

workout out shoulders with hand injury

Again, just doing side raises for a shoulder workout is not a particularly good workout but its infinitely better than nothing.  Lats are tough because all lat exercises require pulling and I cant even use a lifting strap.  Hanging ab strap pullups are awesome!!!

  1. mine is easy: i’m just to lazy
your site helped me a lot tough, lost 20kg with the food tips
doing cardio about 1h a week, but i’m just to lazy to do more (sometime’s i even skip a week. shame on me, i know)

    greetings from belgium

  2. Most pathetic: “I can’t go to the gym because I’m too hungover”
Ridiculous: “I can’t workout because I sweat too much and I feel disgusting”

But all excuses aside, I’d think doing your job with an infected hand has to be extremely frustrating. Hope it gets better soon

  3. Last night, when I was just about to quit my everynight cardio session (tired, sore feet, rainy/snowy weather), I peeked at your website – 5 minutes later I hit the road. This works for me every time I hesitate.
Thank you, Scooby and take care (which you already do and that is awesome ;)

  4. “It’s so cold and wet outside, not a good day for a workout”,

especially during the winter season you hear that a lot… I never understood that one. I always reply: “Yeah, you’re right, it’s cold and wet, thats the BEST workout-weather… Today you get the chance to show how tough you really are and how winter can kiss your fatfree cheeks!”

I always feel like Stallone from Rocky 4 those days ;-)

  5. Doesn’t muscle growth compete with the healing process?

I know some injuries benefit from exercise (e.g. minor back injuries, and I had to recuperate from an injured knee last year and it didn’t improve until I exercised it), but isn’t it sometimes a good idea to take it easy or at least exercise in moderation?

  6. I am 2 week’s out from a inguinal hernia repair, and while weights are out and it kills me,I have used the Elliptical for at least 30 min for the last week.Getting about 8 miles an hour too.Excuses suck,go work out, lol!

  7. i just injured my shoulder after falling on ice while running in the recent snowstorm in nyc. I have a separated AC which apparently will heal itself in two weeks or so. The doc said I should not do any weight bearing movements – so pretty much anything using that arm. I dont think i should work out just one arm because I would be lopsided. I guess I could walk/run/bike but whenever i move at all really i get some pain .. so ive just stopped working out for the meanwhile.. bad idea? or what?

    1. well she certainly has made her priorities clear. Hopefully i ts not the workouts she objects to but the environment. Hopeffuly you can get her interested in home workouts, hiking, or something physical

  8. I have now an injury in my left shoulder that keep me off now for 2 weeks, i hope no more than 1 month :( and i still doing abs, I flex my muscles to keep mass and strenght and of course i do my daily cardio and legs. If we were stoping working out everytime we get a little injruy we would look like crap all the time :/

  9. “I don’t have the right equipment.” (there was a pun in there somewhere)
    “I’m sleepy.”
“Working out makes me feel even more tired.”
“I don’t want to have to wash my hair every day.”
“I don’t look so bad that I need to get in shape anyway.”

  10. I love this excuse that Ryan on Facebook has heard, its so true because I have heard this onemany times: “”I can’t workout now, it’s the middle of the week! I’ll start Monday.”

  11. Dave on Facebook heard this treasure: “I just don’t have time to workout”. She has time to watch, Days of our Lives, Honey Boo Boo, Snooki and JWoww, Teen Mom 2, Being Human, The Walking Dead, and the same movie countless times, but can’t find 30 minutes to work out!

  12. its fascinating how you manage to keep us motivated and provide an inspiration…you truly preach by example…i cannot put in words how eople like me are grateful to you…wishing for your speedy recovery…btw the most annoying excuse is that “i dont have time today” or something like “i will wait untill xxx day to start my workout”

  13. My excuse at the moment is I have arrythmia problem (heart beat) at the moment and exercise can make me pass out very easily at the moment. Just waiting to get better I suppose.
